VNC server to remotely control your desktop/laptop from phone

So many times it has happened to me that we're all ready to switch off the lights in the bedroom and then realize that we've left the desktop on downstairs. Then a painful journey, just to shut it down.

Recently found a good way around, which is quite helpful in a number of other scenarios.

It involves a simple installation of free VNC server on the desktop or laptop that you want to control. It's available from here. On the computer you just need to install VNC server, no viewer is required.

Then (presumably you have a smartphone, preferably Android) install a small free utility called AndroidVNC from playstore, on your smartphone. If you have iphone, a similar free VNC viewer utility should be available as well.

Note IP address of your machine, a simple setup on your phone and bingo, you can control your laptop/desktop using your phone. Closing a few windows & shutting it down is easy. If the kid has gone in saying he's doing homework, then keeping an eye on if he's using google or playing FB games is possible too.
