Sholay - Background Music

I was watching Sholay once again the other day, and realise something. We all know how great this movie is. Enough has been said about the acting, the cast, the songs, the story, the dialogues.

But what I realised the other day is that no one has talked about the background music in the movie. More I saw, more I realised how important has that music towards the success of the movie.

Can you imagine the train scene without that background music?

The mundane fight when Jai and Veeru first time reaches Ramgarh. I don't think that fight have been that good without that amazing piece of background music.

When you think, you'll realise that all the iconic scenes of the movie are so tightly linked to a masterpiece of background music. Be it Gabbar's entry or Thakur arriving at his home after the massacre of his family or the fight on holi or basanti being chased by the goons... the list goes on.

So I got interested to confirm if Sholay's background music was also composed by the great R. D. Burman. It indeed was, although the titles of the movie doesn't mention background score separately.

While searching for this, I came across this very well-written piece, worth reading if you have time.

That's it for now. Hats off to the great R. D. Burman for this masterpiece of a background score.

I'll leave you with some good old material (songs, scenes, deleted scenes, alternate ending, fan made trailer etc.) from this cult classic. Enjoy.
