I personally am an outdoor person. Love to walk, cycle, play cricket. But whenever I have more time at hand, I love to travel. As a family we've been quite fortunate to have opportunities to travel and visit numerous places.
To look back, it all actually began when I was a kid. Dad used to travel a lot, both professionally and leisurely. He used to take us for his short one or two day work trips to Mumbai. We used to visit so many nearby places for weekend or holiday trips. I think that's where I picked up penchant to explore.
When I started my career, initially I was restricted to my home town. I just wanted to be safe, and be at the place which I knew best, among my family and friends. But at one point, I exhausted all my options and was forced to move out. I did, and never looked back.
Shifted to Gurgaon on a project in 2003. Stayed there alone for a month, and then convinced the customer to accommodate my wife & son as well. We loved staying at a new place, in a completely new environment, meeting new people.
Came back from the project, and picked up a role in Kolkata. Packed bags and we shifted to Kolkata. That was an amazing experience. If Gurgaon was different, this was even more diverse. A completely different culture, different language, a completely different lifestyle. My homeowner used to have dinner after 11pm in night. Roads, restaurants, markets... everything was different. At the beginning we were shocked, but loved the diversity.
Then came the big shift. Visited UK for a week for a workshop, and fell in love with the place. Also visited Sao Paulo for a week. Realised that staying in India till now, I have missed rest of the world. Got an opportunity to shift to UK for a year, and grabbed it. Shifted with family to Croydon. Took a bit of time to get adjusted to life outside India, but immediately loved the positives. Amazing workplace, friendly colleagues. Croydon wasn't best of the place to leave, but coming from Kolkata we loved it :). Our movement was restricted a bit as Divya (wifey) was pregnant with Anushka at the time.
The project shifted from Croydon to Vevey, and we shifted along. Travelled crazy in 2 years we stayed at Montreux. Visited amazing places. Saw & experienced things like never before. Drove around, travelled via trains... France, Italy, Austria. Drove around Switzerland like anything, visited each and every corner. To make most out of the Schengen visa, I remember we just drove around Lake Geneva on the last day of our visa :). It was truly amazing experience.
Shifted back to India, took a role in Bangalore. This time explored Southern India, which was fun too. But were missing UK. Changed the role & shifted back to UK, this time Birmingham. We've been staying in Solihull for past 8 years, and have been exploring UK & Europe, visiting India in between.
Australia, Eastern Europe, East Asia, US are next on our list.
